Walk to Market - Hungerford < Back

Why not combine a visit to your local farmer’s market with a walk in the countryside and a trip back in time? It’s a chance to leave the car at home, stretch your legs and re-trace the footsteps of your forebears as they walked to market in the 19th century.

To help you relive the past, we are offering free maps of the area for a week before the market. Download them by clicking below on the map you want.

Hungerford - Walk to Market

Hungerford Market - Walk to Market Whether you come past The Downgate and down what was once Cow Lane, or use the original southern road into Hungerford through Stanham Green, you just need to hand in your map at the HEAT (Hungerford Environmental Action Team) stall at the market to receive an I Walked to Market certificate. This can be used to get a 10% discount from various stall holders including Jacqui’s Homemade Sweets, Ogg Valley Organics, Country Deli and Kingston Herb Garden. There’s no need to skimp on purchases as help will be provided to get shopping home if it is too heavy for walkers to carry – just the way Giles the Carrier, operating from the building which now houses the Fish and Chip shop, used to deliver groceries by horse and cart for a penny.
