About the maps

Old Series, Popular Edition and Revised New

Cassini’s Old Series, Popular Edition and Revised New Series maps are digitally enhanced reproductions of the original Ordnance Survey maps of the same names – but with a very important difference.
We have combined, re-projected and enlarged them to match the scale and coverage of the present-day Ordnance Survey Landrangers®, so making direct comparison between the past and the present easy and accurate. The name and reference number is in each case also the same as the corresponding Landranger®. Click on the appropriate ‘Find Maps’ button above to locate the map/s you need.

Historical 3-map Box Sets
Cassini's Historical 3-map Box Sets contain a set of three matching Cassini maps from three different periods. These maps are taken from Ordnance Survey's Old Series, Revised New Series and Popular Edition maps. Each map in the Box Set has been carefully scanned, digitally re-projected and enlarged to match the present-day Ordnance Survey Landranger® series. Click on the appropriate ‘Find Maps’ button above to locate the map/s you need.

Past & Present Series
Cassini's Past & Present Series take a different approach – each comprises four maps of the same area from four different periods between the 19th century all the present day. All maps have been digitally enhanced and are at the same 1:50,000 scale for ease of comparison. Click on the appropriate ‘Find Maps’ button above to locate the map/s you need.

Historical Maps of London
The Cassini Historical Maps of London provide a unique and fascinating overview of 150 years of London’s rich history from 1805 to 1946.They reveal how the capital engulfed surrounding villages to become, for much of this period, the largest city in the world. Each map explores a crucial period in London’s recent history: the late Georgian (1805-22), the late Victorian railway era (1897-8), the dawn of the motoring age (1919-20) and the period of reconstruction following the Second World War (1945-6). Cartographical and historical notes provide background information to help bring London’s past to life.

Fay Weldon, author

Cassini Historical maps make excellent presents at any time of the year. Quite aside from their usefulness for research, historical maps are fascinating and compelling. As gifts, they have the added advantages of being long-lasting, inexpensive and thought-provoking.

"We find these historical maps fascinating. Especially when you have them side-by-side with the modern map. Even my grandchildren are interested and we have spent ages crawling around on the floor comparing the past and present of places where they live."

"Thank you Cassini! You have solved my annual problem of what to buy all the men in my life - I have ordered Past & Presents of Salisbury and Guildford and sets of maps 126 and 186 from the 3 different time periods for my father, father-in-law and brothers-in-laws. They are unique, fascinating and most importantly affordable."
